EDIT: WE FINISHED EARLY – 100 MILES IN 4 DAYS!
… so I’m packing for this 4.5 day run from San Diego to Los Angeles. Took me about 3 minutes to finish packing. Basically going to run with an ID, credit card, iPhone & charger, toothbrush, bottle of water and the clothes on my back. I forgot to mention a pack of CVS brand kleenex just in case we can’t find… anyway. Some details have changed since I’ve last blogged about this event about a month ago. Instead of 130 miles we’ve decided to do a 100 mile run (Century Run). Probably a better idea since neither of us have even run a marathon. Oh yes, and it’ll be just my friend Doug and I on this run. Unfortunately, our third runner Doug’s cousin injured his ankle in the past weeks. I feel bad because this run was originally his idea, but I couldn’t back out because I had already committed to taking those days off which in turn has affected a part time gig I’m attached too. (Sorry Rich, we’ll plan another run!) Anyways, I digress.
I am all kinds of excited at the moment, and scared. And full! I went to Olive Garden earlier (by myself – LOSER!) and carbo-loaded on bread sticks, gnocchi soup, and spaghetti.
Please wish us well.
We head down from Los Angeles to San Diego Tuesday evening and we’ll be staying at my favorite cousin Becky and her hubs Isaac’s place. After a good night’s rest we’ll be taking off first thing in the morning around 7am. Our first stop will be breakfast in the La Jolla/UCSD area. Any recommendations? From La Jolla we trek on up to Cardiff by the Sea/Encinitas for lunch, quick rest and then on to Oceanside. Our original plan was to stay in Oceanside for the evening and then run straight through Camp Pendelton with their permission but realized that would have been about 22 miles without anywhere to stop for a bite to eat. So, we’re bypassing Camp Pendelton via Amtrak and starting day 2 in Dana Point. Here are the rest of our stops more or less. Please comment with any reccomendations for places to eat!
La Jolla – Breakfast DAY 1
Cardiff by the Sea/Encinitas (lunch)

Dana Point (dinner/breakfast) DAY 2
Laguna Beach (lunch)

Sunset Beach/Seal Beach (lunch)
Downtown Long Beach (dinner/breakfast) DAY 4

Manhattan Beach (dinner/breakfast) DAY 5
Santa Monica (lunch – JOIN US!)
I should be “Tweeting” our progress so if you’re interested in following us please do so at twitter.com/bigphonymusic (@bigphonymusic). Hopefully some of our friends (hint hint) can find out when we touch down in Santa Monica at the pier and meet us with high fives and beer. haha.
Most of all, please pray for us, if you believe in that kind of thing. We’re going to be as careful as possible and only running in daylight but there’s so much we don’t know. We’ll be following our planned route on our drive down to make sure it doesn’t have any unforeseen surprises. I’m most worried about the fact that I don’t have health insurance (again, I know… terribly stupid of me).
Part of this run is very personal to me and a lot of it is for those I love and care for. For the memory of lost friends, and for the foundation of new bonds. I’ll be praying a lot, for friends and family and for things of importance in my life. Hopefully I’ll come out of this thing not only alive, but with a greater appreciation for life and those around me.
Ultimately this run will be a time where I can remember, I can forget, and I can move on…
Thanks for listening. See you on the road!
